Studies on antioxidative mechanism of epicatechin 3-O-gallate isolated from green tea

Abstract
Green tea, next to water, is the most popular and commonly consumed beverage in the world. Most of the green tea polyphenols are flavanols, commonly known as catechins. Some major green tea catechins are (-)-epicatechin 3-O-gallate(ECG),
(-)-gpigallocatechin 3-O-gallocatechin, (-)-epigallocatechin, (-)-epicatechin and (+)-catechin. Green tea has been reported to possess various biologic activities and pharmacologic effects, many of which remain to be verified.
In the present study, compounds isolated from green tea were screened for their effect against lipid peroxidation induced by FeSO4 and H2O2. ECG showed the strongest antioxidative activity.
To elucidate the mechanisms of antioxidative activity, the effects of ECG on reactive oxygen species such as hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl radical and superoxide wer einvestigated. ECG showed a remarkable scavenging activity against hydrogen
peroxide
and
significantly prevented the generation of hydroxyl radical and the generation of superoxide by xanthine oxidase.
